A wreckfest ensued once again this season, coming at Quarterslammer this time around, but Carson Scott was able to bypass the madness and earn his first win of his career. Only nine drivers were active at the end of the race—not including Tyler Markel and Chaser nascarfan19 who sat stationary on pit road for the majority of the race—and Zac Campbell was the only Chaser to cross the finish line, finishing two laps down. Rounding out the top five were Stephen Willey, Tyrone Kingston, Dan Bandon, and Harrison Butt.
Three Takeaways: Short Track Tensions: Very seldom did the 100-lapper see a long green flag run. The race was marred by several accidents that took Chasers out of the running left and right. The high banking around all parts of the track did not help matters. Unknown Failure: Markel and nascarfan19 stayed on pit road after they came down on lap 22, but neither returned to the track, even when cars in front of them were dropping out. Neither team would say what caused their long delays, but the nature of it seemed to suggest a major part failure that needed long repairs to make the car runnable on course. Why neither driver took it behind the wall is equally unclear. The Hardcore Racer: Campbell deserves some recognition for being the only Chaser to survive the war of attrition. He made an unscheduled pit stop on lap 87 after leading several laps, but he managed to finish off with a top 10 finish. The next Chaser up on the leaderboard was Nick Smith, crashing out on lap 56. In an insane turn of events, Rampage came away with a victory at Zen Joltis Quad Oval Mega Speedway while Dan Bandon suffered one of the most terrifying accidents the Wendy’s Cup Series has seen this season. Going into turn 4, Emmett Juckem cut down to the bottom lane while Bandon was not yet clear. This sent Bandon careening head-on into the outside wall, flying and grinding on the wall for about 10 seconds before barrel rolling down the banking, getting smacked by John Green and Tyrone Kingston on the way. The accident erased Bandon’s chances of making the Round of 8 while Rampage clinched a spot with his victory. Harry Sorah, Reece Butcher and DaleJrDude88 also fell out of the Chase. Conrad Cooper, Dexter Black, Marty Johnson, and Nick Smith came through for top five finishes.
Three Takeaways: Huge Accidents: The wrecks came at the worst time for the four drivers eliminated this round. Each one of them had involvement in at least one of the four accidents to happen in the race. DaleJrDude88 made contact in the first wreck and plowed into the second while Butcher and Sorah got caught up in a massive squeeze in turn 2. Chasers Sweep the Round: Even with four drivers previously eliminated, three different Chase racers in the Round of 12 were able to sweep up the victories. nascarfan19 won from the pole at Spring Creek Raceway and Dajon Weeks at RTR Motor Speedway. Rampage stapled the crew together by powering to the front before the caution flew to finish the race off. |
