When the black and white flag flew after 45 laps of racing, it was the #0 Chevrolet of Cesar who took home the trophy for the NFRN Elite Cup Series season opener at Columbia International Speedway.
Cesar's win makes him the first international driver to earn a victory in the NFRN. Cesar is a native of Brazil. For nascarfan19, he still lacks a regular season victory. "I hate it for my guys," nascarfan19 said. "I watched the NCL race on replay during my break and saw [Eric] Van Arsdale make that crossover on the backstretch. Now I wonder what made me hold back." The #29 of Stuart Gratton looked as though his differing pit strategy would bite him on the draft, but lap traffic helped him at first and hurt him nearing the end. "I probably made the wrong move as I got stuck behind the #46, and that cost me an even better result," Gratton said. In a very surprising run, Griffin Lynn, who took a terrifying tumble down the track at the entry of the tri-oval in the NFRN Amateur Cup Series race, pulled together a sixth-place finish on the lead lap. Full-time competitors took notice. "I was extremely impressed with Griffin Lynn, and I'll love to see where he goes," said Amethyst Ashley, who finished ninth after pitting late in the race. While this race saw the fewest wrecks among 42-car fields this weekend, they continued to be very violent. Two separate incidents took place at the end of lap three, one of them happening after drivers should have slowed down for the caution. Bruno de Barros, Jek Porkins, and Jett Kraus also flipped simultaneously in another accident, with Kraus ending up stuck in the fence. |
