Stephen Willey starts off the Wendy’s Cup Series with a bang. The first race of the series and the season went to Bumpdraftin’ Superspeedway and the #62 car came out victorious. Willey defeated Zac Campbell by just under a second after he got held up by the slow car of Emmett Juckem with two laps to go. Jonny Gardner, Paul Brenner, and Andrew Golden rounded out the top five. The field spread out from pack racing after the first green flag pit stops.
Three Takeaways: Early Win: Willey is sitting comfortably by winning the first race of the season. Assuming he maintains a top 35 standing at race #16, he’s guaranteed a spot in the Chase. The Big One: On a superspeedway, it’s expected that one accident will be big, and that happened on lap 11 as multiple cars wrecked on the backstretch. It all started when Pat Hayes and William Brock nudged each other on the kink and careened to the outside wall. A chain reaction caused most of the back half of the field to get involved. 10 drivers declared out from this wreck. Polesitter Woes: Rampage grabbed the pole for the event but came home a disappointing 33rd place after having a slow first pit stop, getting involved in the big one and then had an altercation with tlove48man, effectively ending his day. |
